US Lentil, Pea, Chickpea Production Forecast Sharply Higher 


US production of lentils, dry edible peas, and chickpeas is expected to surge this year, with increases in acreage, yields, and harvested area combining to push output well above 2024 levels, according to the latest government estimates. 

The monthly USDA crop production report on Friday estimated 2025 American lentil output at 502,720 tonnes, up 23% from last year. Planted area rose to 1.07 million acres, a 15% increase from 2024, while harvested area is pegged at 1.05 million acres, up 16%. Average yields are forecast at 1,055 lbs/acre, 53 pounds higher than last year. If realized, both harvested area and production will set record highs for the US. 

For dry edible peas, planted area climbed to 1.18 million acres, up 21% from a year earlier, while harvested area rose 21% to 1.13 million acres. Production is forecast at 933,310 tonnes, also up 23% from 2024. Yields are expected to average 30.2 bu/acre, a slight improvement from last year. Montana is forecast to set record highs for both planted and harvested acres, while Nebraska and North Dakota could achieve record yields. 

National chickpea production is expected to rise the most in percentage terms, jumping 32% to 337,020 tonnes. Planted area edged up to 541,000 acres, 8% higher than last year, while harvested area is forecast at 524,000 acres, up 6%. Average yields are projected at 1,418 lbs/ acre, an increase of 274 lbs from 2024.
